Accelerators

Accelerator take information on the page and provide quick ways to use it with other Web services. The default accelerators are Windows Live applications such as Map with Live Search and E-mail with Windows Live.

Adding Accelerators

Internet Explorer, Tools, Manage Add-ons, Accelerators. At the bottom of the screen click Find More Accelerators. Browse through the available categories to find one you want. Notice the choice to þ Make this as my default provider for this Accelerator Category. Click to Add to Internet Explorer. Accelerator Gallery

Using Accelerators

Highlighting text on a page brings up the accelerator button.  The requested accelerator opens with a click in a new tabbed window. Many accelerators provide a preview of the available content when you rest your mouse on the accelerator.  Tip: try highlighting and address and use a map accelerator.

Managing Accelerators

Internet Explorer, Tools, Manage Add-ons, Accelerators. Click the accelerator and choose Remove as Default, Disable or Remove completely.

Turning off Accelerators

Tools, Internet Options, Advanced, Browsing, Display Accelerator on selection. Clear this checkbox.

Copied Text

Copy text such as an address from say e-mail or document. Open a new tab in Internet Explorer. Select from the list of Accelerators and the copied text is automatically used by the Accelerator to search.

Backing Up Favorites

File – Import and Export – Export to a file - Next - þ Favorites – Next, Next - Browse - choose location and type a filename. Perhaps favorites rather than bookmarks. Next, Finish.

Clean-Up

Choose Tools - Delete Browsing History... If you know your usernames and passwords for the sites you visit then most complete clean-up is to have all choices checked.

Compatibility View

The compatibility view button is only displayed for pages using older web standards.  Click it to view the site in compatibility mode.

Color-Coded Tabbing

Lots of tabs open at the same time? Use Ctrl-Click when clicking links. The new tab will be colored to match the tab of the site from which you linked from. 

The warning you receive when closing the browser with multiple tabs open has is no longer the default setting.  Tools, Internet Options, General tab, Tabs section,  Settings button.

Consider þ checking Always switch to new tabs when they are created. Notice When a new tab is opened, open - select Your first home page if you like.

Saving Tab Sets as Favorites

Arrange the websites you want by using the New Tabs button . Click Favorites, Add Current Tabs to Favorites. You will be prompted for a folder name. Using the Favorites Pane you can now right-click on the folder and choose Open in Tabbed Group.

Copying

If you receive the "Allow access from Clipboard" message when copying and pasting from Internet Explorer 8, you can adjust the security settings to avoid this message.  Tools - Internet Options - Security tab - Custom Level button - Scripting - select the option Allow Programmatic clipboard access - change to Disable and then yes to change this setting when prompted.

Homepage 

Navigate to the website you want to use as your homepage. Click the arrow to the right of the Home button and then click Change Home Page. Use this as your only home page.

Multiple Homepages

Open the pages you would like to use as your homepages using the New Tab button.  

Once you have opened the pages you would like to set them as your Home Pages, click on the arrow to the right of the Home button then click Change Home Page. Choose Use the current tab set as your home page.

Adding Homepages

While viewing a page that you would like to add to your homepage set, click the arrow to the right of the Home button  , change Home Page.  Add This Page to Your Home Page Tabs.

Delete A Home Page

Click the arrow to the right of the Home button   and choose Remove to open the list of your home pages. Click on the page in the list you want to remove and click Yes.

Rearrange Homepage Sets

Tools - Internet Options - General

Right-click the home page you want to move, then click Cut. Click at the beginning of the line where you want to move the home page address and then press ENTER to create and empty line. Right-click the empty line and choose Paste. Repeat as necessary.

Moving Toolbars

Right-click on the menu bar or choose View Toolbars and you can remove the 3Lock the Toolbars. You can now place your mouse over any of the grippers in front of each toolbar and drag it to a new location.

You can move the Refresh and Stop buttons to appear before the address bar. Right-click to the right of the menu bar and choose Customize, Show Stop and Refresh button before address bar.

InPrivate Browsing

When you want to browse the internet without leaving History, open a new tab and choose Browse with InPrivate. This is useful when using an internet cafe or shopping for a surprise gift. History, temporary internet files, form data, cookies, usernames or passwords are not tracked.

InPrivate Filtering

Blocks third-party websites (advertisers) from tracking browsing behavior across multiple websites. Enabling it is a good idea. Tools  3 InPrivate Filtering.  Choose Tools - InPrivate Filtering Settings to be more specific about sites to block or length of history. InPrivate Filtering may make your browsing experience slower.

Search Provider

Change your default Search Provider by clicking on the  search options and select Manage Search Providers. You can have multiple providers to choose from on the fly. Be sure to designate the one you wish to use for default.

SmartScreen Filter

This is security related. Choose Tools - SmartScreen Filter to turn on or off, check a website or report an unsafe website to Microsoft.

Suggested Sites

Suggested Sites is a Microsoft service designed to suggest other websites you might be interested in based on the websites you visit most.

Privacy Concerns

Enabling Suggested Sites allows Microsoft to collect information about your specific browsing habits, history, etc. Privacy experts are concerned about the vagueness of Microsoft's Privacy Policy on this score. There is also a choice to disable during InPrivate browsing. Tools, InPrivate browsing

Removing from Toolbar

There is currently no way to remove the Suggested Sites from the toolbar. This may become available with future updates.

Web Slices

The IE8 WebSlice feature enables you to see when updated content (auction prices or latest headlines) is available from your favorite websites.  A WebSlice is a piece of a webpage (a “slice”) that you can subscribe to. When you subscribe to a WebSlice, it appears as a shortcut on the Favorites bar. Note that WebSlices will only appear on webpages that provide support for WebSlices
