Microsoft is compiling a list of websites that use “Phishing” techniques. These websites may look legit, but they are after personal information. The Phishing Filter attempts to detect these sites and displays a red warning notification on your address bar. You can click the notification for more information and choose to close the site or continue what you were doing.
However, there’s a privacy issue. Website addresses you visit will be sent to Microsoft to be checked against a list of reported phishing websites. The list is being provided to Microsoft by Nielsen NetRatings, which measures Internet traffic. Currently the number of sites on the approved list is miniscule, but the data Microsoft collects from you, the user, will increase the database. The choice is yours.
